Engine oil performs the main functions of lubricant and cooling in the engine and plays an important role in maintenance of the engine in the good working condition.

Consumption of a quantity of engine oil at usual operation of the engine is a normal phenomenon. The reasons of consumption of oil are given during the normal operation of the engine below.

– Oil is used for lubricant of pistons, piston rings and cylinders. The thin film of oil remains on a cylinder wall when the piston moves down the cylinder. The high negative pressure developed during delay of the car soaks up a quantity of this oil in the combustion chamber. This oil, and also a quantity of the oil film which remained on a cylinder wall burns down because of high temperature of the fulfilled gases in the course of combustion.

– Oil is also used for lubricant of rods of inlet valves. A quantity of this oil is soaked up in the combustion chamber together with the soaked-up air and burns down together with fuel. High temperature of exhaust gases also leads to combustion of the oil used for lubricant of rods of final valves.

The amount of the consumed engine oil depends on viscosity of oil, quality of oil and conditions of driving of the car.

When driving at high speeds and frequent acceleration and delay the bigger amount of oil is consumed.

The new engine consumes more oil as its pistons, piston rings and walls of cylinders did not get used yet.

At assessment of quantity of a consumption of oil consider that oil can be diluted, and it will be difficult to precisely estimate its true level.

For example, if the car is used for frequent short trips and consumes normal amount of oil, the probe for measurement of level can not show any lowering of the level of oil even after passing of 1000 km or more. It occurs because oil is gradually diluted with fuel or moisture, creating visibility that the level of oil did not change.

The diluting ingredients evaporate when the car drives at high speed, for example, on the highway that is shown in the form of an excessive consumption of oil after driving at high speeds.

One of the most important points of the correct technical care of the car is maintenance of engine oil at optimum level that work of engine oil did not worsen. Therefore, it is very important to check oil level regularly. Toyota recommends to check oil level every time when filling your car with fuel.
